The path to study in the USA: admission → I-20 → SEVIS fee → online DS-160 → F-1 visa interview at the US Embassy in Dhaka. It is expensive, but master's and especially PhD students have better chances than anywhere else of teaching or research assistantships (TA/RA) with a tuition waiver and monthly stipend. Many programmes now make the GRE optional. The main intake is fall (August–September).

USA university application from Bangladesh

Every university has its own online application (some offer fee waivers). Graduate admission usually needs an SOP, three recommendation letters, transcripts, an English test (IELTS/TOEFL/Duolingo, depending on the programme) and sometimes the GRE. If you want funding, contacting the relevant professor before applying makes a real difference. This is how USA university admission works for Bangladesh applicants.

USA study without GRE

In recent years many programmes made the GRE "optional" or "not required". Even when optional, a good score helps in funding competition, especially in engineering and sciences. Check each programme's admission page.

F-1 student visa from Bangladesh

  • I-20: issued by the university after admission and proof of funds
  • SEVIS I-901 fee: paid online before the interview
  • DS-160: the online visa form — details must match your other documents exactly
  • Interview: at the US Embassy in Dhaka; wait times vary, so book as soon as you have the I-20
  • The consular officer checks that you are a genuine student, who pays, and that everything you submit — including social media information — is consistent

USA study cost for Bangladesh students

Tuition differs greatly between public and private universities; big cities cost more to live in. A master's in the USA from Bangladesh usually takes 1.5–2 years. Off-campus work in the first year is very limited; on-campus work is allowed for limited hours.

USA scholarship for Bangladesh students and funding
